Introduction
With the enhancement of China’s international status, international communication has been growing rapidly. Therefore, some Western festivals have been celebrated in China, such as Christmas, Valentine’s Day and so on. Chinese and Western festivals differ because of discrepancies in historical background, which leads to great differences both in cultural connotation and manifestation of festivals. Realizing these differences can promote better communications among countries, help absorbing essence of foreign festivals and urge to take a more objective view of foreign festivals’ popularity in China. In this essay, differences in customs of Chinese and American festivals will be discussed from a cultural point of view. This essay will firstly explain festive forms of Chinese and American holidays by taking examples, such as diversities of diets and costumes. Following this, it will explain reasons which cause the differences of Chinese and American festivals. Religious reason, historical reason, cultural reason and other reasons will be considered in this part. Finally, it will take a summary of the diverse festive forms and reasons of the diversity of the Chinese and the Western festivals.
