Abstract Most of the existent literatures on R&D-based endogenous growth theory only implicitly assume that the R&D and other innovation behaviors take place automatically within a profit-seeking firm or within a black box called “scientific sector” so long as labor or physical and human capital are optimally input into the innovation generator. With an aim to provide a more primitive behavioral micro-foundation for the endogenous technical change and the related fluctuations, this paper explores the dynamic research behavior of a representative researcher with endogenous time preference under a given institutional arrangement of innovation. We find that the optimal effort level and the achieved innovation obey a saddle point path or show tremendous fluctuations even without introducing the stochastic nature of innovative activity. We also find that the fluctuation frequencies are largely dependant both on the researcher’s characteristics such as their risk attitudes and innovative abilities and on the nature of innovation process per se. Short-run analyses are also made on the effect of cooperation in the innovation process. . Key Words: research behavior, technical change, endogenous time preference
