- Self-awareness in The poetry of Emily Dickinson
The poetry of Emily Dickinson has been regarded as one of the most difficult and ambiguous literary work since the nineteen century. Though she turns reclusive since her early thirties, her thoughts have never been confined to a limited physical space. In a sense, Emily Dickinson transcends the limitations posed on her. Her style is unique and genuine, her feelings and thoughts are intense and meaningful, and undoubtedly, “is wildly considered one of the greatest poets in American literature. Her unique, gemlike lyrics are distillations of profound and original intellect that stand outside the mainstream of 19th-century American literature”. (Richardson, Illustrated Dictionary of Literature 58) It is noticeable that Dickinson’s poetry was not welcomed and widely accepted when Mable Todd sought to publish her poetry, for Dickinson did not follow conventional rules when composing works. However, time proves the value of her poetry, as well as her being a person of forethought; her poetry is ahead of time, and becomes the model of twentieth-century poetry.
