Abstract
Great Expectations is written in Dickens’ late period, when he lost hope for the English bourgeois society. Having experienced rich human life, Dickens put all his profound recognition and mature thought about human nature in the novel. Therefore Great Expectations is one of his works of maturity. Some critics consider it as the best of his works. This thesis will put emphasis on this novel’s educational meanings as well as its artistic features. The first chapter will provide us a brief introduction to the author and the novel. The second chapter will focus on confrontation of individual weakness and guilty past to search one’s identity and will specifically analysis the moral achievement of the hero through intense inner struggle. The third chapter will elaborate the unique artistic features of the novel including narrative techniques and character portrayal. The last chapter is about the great achievement of Charles Dickens and his great influence on the later literary creation. 《远大前程》是狄更斯晚年的一部作品。当时作者已经对资本主义社会大失所望。阅尽人生浮华的狄更斯在这本小说中将自己体会到的对人生感悟和认识娓娓道来。因此《远大前程》是狄更斯创作成熟期的一部作品。许多批评家也将它列为狄更斯的佳作之一。本文旨在探讨这部小说的教育意义和艺术特色。第一章简单介绍作家生平和作品大意。第二章将焦点聚集在人在寻找自我时勇敢与自我弱点和有罪的过往对峙上面。正是由于这种对峙和激烈的心理斗争与深刻的内心剖析,人性的真善美才能战胜假恶丑,才能取得道德进步。第三章着重阐述小说的艺术特色,尤其是它的叙事技巧和人物刻画。最后得出结论,狄更斯是英国文学史的一代名家,取得了辉煌的成就,并且对后世文学创作带来深远的影响。
