Assignment 2: 1500 Word Essay

Essay Title:

‘A family can be defined as a married heterosexual couple and their children’.  How have social scientists challenged this kind of conventional definition of the UK family?

You should answer this question using an interdisciplinary approach, drawing on three social science disciplines.

• This Assessment is worth 30% of the overall mark for this module. Your work will be marked out of 100
• Your essay should be 1500 words (+/-10%) in length.
• The aim of this assessment is to enable you to demonstrate your ability to understand social change using a comparative approach.
• The deadline for this piece of work is Week 9. You must submit a single copy of your essay to the Academic Services Office by Thursday 24th March by 3pm.
• Your work must be formally submitted to the College Office before the deadline.
• Please be aware of College procedures regarding late submission.

This is an individual assignment, so although you will have worked on a group presentation with the same title, you must not simply copy the work of other group members.

Marking Criteria – As a brief guideline, marks for this essay are awarded according to the following criteria:

a) The quality and depth of critical analysis (not just description!)
b) The extent to which the work is coherently structured.
c) The accurate referencing of the texts and data sources used in your analysis.
d) The extent to which what you write is accurate

A more detailed marking scheme is attached. Please make sure that you are familiar with the scheme as it explains how your mark has been arrived at.

1. The most important thing you must do in completing this assessment is to make sure that you answer the task that has been set.

2. Ensure that you remain within the word limits given. The word limit is to test whether you can write concisely, thereby getting all the main points down without wandering ‘off-topic’.

3. In presenting your answer you should not use sub-headings and bullet points or the numbering of paragraphs. Using continuous prose enables you to develop arguments and to inter-link issues you are raising.
