Abstract
In the mid 1990s, an intense competition started in the world for the position of an international shipping center and a regional international container hub port. The level of the competition has even gone beyond the business scope of the port and shipping industries, and become http://www.51lunwen.com/logistics/2012/0128/lw201201281930569599.html  more and more characterized by a governmental color of administrative action. Quite a few countries have passed laws aiming at strengthening port construction and development. To deepen the theoretical research on port development and fully comprehend its basic functioning laws will be of great practical significance for us to plan a coordinated development of port and social economy and advance the construction of Shanghai international shipping center. Currently, with the depth of economic globalization, the role of port is not that simple. Besides traditional functions of transferring and circulating goods from one place to another, port has been an important transportation hub of global resources allocation to link the sea and land; it is an important base for regional economic development and industrial structure layout and it is an important window to implement open policy and to attract international capital. Although there have been numerous researches focused on port and port’s development, seldom of them centered on a detailed port, not to speak of the influencing factors of it. Adopted the case study method, this paper explores the factors that have an influence http://www.51lunwen.com/logistics/2012/0128/lw201201281930569599.html  on the development of Shanghai Port. One port’s development has a close relation with social economy and social productivity. There exists an interaction between port and social economy or social productivity. On the one hand, the development of social economy enlarges relevant demand of freightage and then promotes the ports to improve its capacity. On the other hand, the increase of social productivity improves conditions and equipments of ports so as to meet the demand of large-scale international trade. Through measuring a set of factors, the author divided both positive and negative factors in the development history of Shanghai Port.
