Abstract A well-designed and steadily performed supply chain is indispensable to healthy performance of manufacturing industries. Starting from this thesis, XL, the main packing supplier of Guangzhou P&G, is selected as the research subject.
Through the study of XL Company, the inventory control throughout the supply chain is analyzed. Thus the lean thinking which is widely used for continuous improvement in manufacturing industries is proposed in the study.
On the basis of analysis of the factors which influence inventory cost, the strategy of avoiding excessive inventory in production is pointed out. The research frame of inventory cost is determined by stages: the raw material inventory, work-in-progress inventory, and finished goods inventory. By SWOT analysis of XL Company, the safety stock level of raw material in XL Company is counted and confirmed. The improvement of raw material safety stock level is determined by adopting Shapiro-wilk & Robert Hammond Inventory Model. Moreover, the principle of Vendor Managed Inventory was also proposed for the raw material inventory strategy. The XL Company's executive plan in reducing in-progress work is implemented using Value Stream Map Analysis of Lean Thinking.
