1.1 Research Background

Cleaning equipment industry is one of sunrise industries with promising future inChina. Compared to economic downtrend in European countries, China cleaningequipment industry has gradually developed itself from an inefficient labor marketinto scale market with high efficient cleaning equipment.

There are 210,000 professional cleaning companies, more than 20 million peopleengaged in cleaning or related work in China. The public plazas, entertainmentcenters, hotels, restaurants, airports, train stations, subways, convention centers,supermarkets, offices, schools, hospitals, factories require cleaning equipment to carryout cleaning work. As more and more workers from the rural areas move into the bigcities, along with the continued expansion of the hotel and restaurant and other serviceindustries, the pressure on urban sanitation is also increasing, and the requirements forhigher environmental health level are put forward. Especially with the improvementof people's living standards, the yearly demand for cleaning requirement issignificantly increased, and customers are more aware of the importance of cleaningindustry. On the other hand, cleaning work is generally regarded as a tiring and dirtywork and therefore many young people are unwilling to do this kind of job, resultingin a serious shortage of labor and rising labor costs. As a result, high efficient cleaningequipment will undoubtedly become useful tool to cope with labor shortage and risinglabor costs. The cleaning efficiency of a sweeper could be 5-15 times of a manualworker, the cleaning companies make investment in buying the equipment but they reap benefits afterward, their overall cost of cleaning is substantially reduced.Therefore, the professional cleaning equipment market in China is huge.

1.2 Research Problems and Purpose

Because Chinese cleaning equipment market has a huge potential and a large room forgrowth, China has become the target market for many multinational companies with aview to expand sales and maintain steady growth. However, after a number ofmultinational companies entering the Chinese market, their business practices do notwork in China well due to mismanagement and lack of understanding of the Chinesemarket; consequently they are not able to achieve their sales target in China.Currently in China there is no complete industry standards for cleaning equipmentindustry and industry barriers to entry is relatively low, so the market competition isparticularly fierce. With the rise of more and more Chinese domestic cleaningequipment enterprises, the growth space for the foreign-funded enterprises has beengreatly squeezed.
