1 Introduction


1.1 Research Background

With the rapid development of the world economy, Chinese government has openedthe trade rights to direct foreign enterprise. At the same time, more and moremultinational companies have entered China market. This leads global sourcingquickly popular and Chinese domestic production enterprises directly export. Allthese have driven small foreign trade companies under great pressures. The foreigntrade companies’ asymmetric information advantage has already disappeared by thequick development of information technology. What’s more, the small andmedium-sized enterprises are becoming the vulnerable groups in the market due toasymmetric information and less risk taken ability.

In recent years, along with the deterioration of the environment of international trade,the international market competition is increasingly violent. The domestic labor costsare raising and the RMB devaluation. All the problems above have led to the sharpdecline of sales and profit for enterprises. The enterprise competition is not only thecompetition of market share; it is the competition of supply chain as well, especiallyfor trade companies. However, the current domestic foreign trade companymanagement level is low. From the industry, we can find it lack of standardizebusiness activities to manage supply chain. There is a long way to go for Chineseprofessional foreign trade companies to finish the transformation from the traditionalbusiness man in the middle.

1.2 Significance of the Research

For foreign trade industry, the supplier management is an important part of themanagement of foreign trade companies. Foreign trade companies could use the bestsuppliers of resources to reduce procurement risk and provide more rapid responseand meet customer demand. It’s to improve the customer satisfaction. At the sametime, foreign trade company's supplier management research can guide foreign tradecompanies and suppliers establish appropriate relationship and achieve commondevelopment of both sides.

However, most of the current domestic supplier management related theories aim atthe manufacturing industry; especially for the foreign trade company's suppliermanagement theory is relatively less, especially the supplier risk management. In fact,there is a certain difference between foreign trade companies and manufacturingenterprises in the supplier management. The foreign trade company belongs to theservice industry, focusing on the circulation of commodities and delivery the domesticmanufacturing of product sales to foreign customers. But the foreign trade companydoes not engage in direct production of goods, it’s a small part only occupied theentire value chain and the procurement costs account for almost 75% to 80% of thetotal amount of the cost.
